The Campaign to ease illiteracy from Detroit

Detroit Reads

"…Literacy is no longer an option, …it is a lifeline."

Nearly half of Detroit’s adult population is classified as “functionally illiterate.” The work of erasing illiteracy in Detroit is critical to improving the quality of lives in our communities.

The Detroit Public Library’s vision is to erase illiteracy from the city of Detroit.

Literacy Council

In May of 2009, the Detroit Library Commission established a Detroit Literacy Council, charged with advising the Library on strategies for programs and services that support and provide literacy development opportunities for Detroit residents.

The 21-member Literacy Council comprises of leaders from business, community, government, and literacy service providers, who come together in recognition that many Detroiters face literacy challenges that limit their ability to lead economically and socially secured lives. The City of Detroit is strengthened when every resident can successfully complete an employment application; read and understand directions for improved personal health, such as prescription dosage, to assist a child with a homework assignments, or to fully participate in the electoral process. It is to that end that this Council pools their collective talents erasing illiteracy from the City of Detroit.

Anyone who can read can teach someone else to read. If you cannot commit time to teach someone to read, perhaps you are able to contribute funds to hire someone to help teach our children and adults who are low level readers and non-readers
