The Campaign to ease illiteracy from Detroit

Detroit Reads

"…Literacy is no longer an option, …it is a lifeline."

Nearly half of Detroit’s adult population is classified as “functionally illiterate.” The work of erasing illiteracy in Detroit is critical to improving the quality of lives in our communities.

The Detroit Public Library’s vision is to erase illiteracy from the city of Detroit.

Knight Foundation

On November 4, 2009, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded a major grant to the Detroit Public Library, for the purpose of introducing a Technology, Literacy & Career Center (TLC) at the Parkman Branch Library, located at Oakman Blvd & Linwood.

Through this grant, the Detroit Public Library will expand free Internet access to the public at the Parkman Branch library, by building a new technology and literacy center. The library will be able to serve additional Detroiters in the neighborhood, who are literacy challenged, need access to the Internet or need help job finding.
